Early morning at Tsukiji, which opens at 03h00

We got up at 03h00 this morning to take a taxi out to the world`s biggest fish market, Tsukiji Ichiba. It was well worth the lack of sleep and money (taxis are incredibly expensive in Tokyo) to see some of the 25,000 tonnes of sea food that change hands EVERY morning. If it lives in the sea you are sure to find it here.
The highlight was definitely the tuna auction that starts at 05h30. The fresh tuna is sold in Japan and the blast-frozen tuna is sent all over the world. The best tuna can go for ¥10,000 and one of the buyers we talked to said that one tuna recently went for ¥20 million. Think about it, that is more than 1 million SEK, for ONE fish! However, the most lucrative fish is another one. The puffer fish, Fugu, is the most expensive fish you can eat in Japan. Fugu contains neuro toxins and if cooked by someone else than a licensed chef you can say your prayers.

The done thing to do when visiting the Tsukiji market is to have Sushi breakfast at Daiwa, supposedly the best sushi in Tokyo (since the fish has not been frozen nor transported). We washed down tuna belly with Sapporo beer at 06h00, the Tokyo way!
